Explore the Collaborative Co-Parent Method, which features the effective communication framework known as the Four Pillars of Communication — Listen, Pause, Reflect, Respond. This proven approach by Gabriella Pomare is designed to reduce conflict and enhance co-parenting communication.
Effective communication is not about saying more. It is about responding with clarity, intention, and awareness — especially during conflict. The Collaborative Co-Parent Method™ is built on a simple yet powerful effective communication framework known as the Four Pillars of Communication: Listen, Pause, Reflect, and Respond. These four steps transform communication from reactive to intentional.
Why Communication Breaks Down
During conflict, communication often becomes reactive, emotional, and defensive. This leads to escalation rather than resolution.
Pillar 1: Listen
Listening is not just hearing words; it is about understanding the message behind them. In co-parenting, this means focusing on the issue being raised, the practical concern, and the underlying need.
Pillar 2: Pause
The pause is one of the most powerful tools in the effective communication framework. It creates space between the trigger and your reaction. Instead of responding immediately, you allow yourself time to consider your response.
Pillar 3: Reflect
Reflection involves considering tone, impact, and the desired outcome. This step shifts communication from emotional to strategic.
Pillar 4: Respond
A response should be calm, clear, and focused on the child. The goal is not to win the conversation but to reduce conflict.
Example in Practice
Message received: “You never cooperate.”
Using the Four Pillars of Communication: Pause → Reflect → Respond
Response: “I’m happy to discuss arrangements for the children. Please let me know the specific issue.”
Applying the Framework
When used consistently, the Four Pillars help reduce escalation, improve clarity, and create calmer communication patterns.
